AU Challenges Faith-Based Prison Program
Posted in General on October 26th, 2005 by bsabel – Comments OffAmericans United for Separation of Church & State, an organization with which the Iowa Secularists are affiliated, filed suit in U.S. District Court against Newton Correctional Facility alleging that the facility’s agreement with Prison Fellowship Ministries violates the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution and various sections of the Iowa Constitution.
The case, which began on October 24, is an important case with national significance. Among the complaints filed by AU on behalf of various Newton inmates, are accusations of religious discrimination in hiring, religious discrimination against inmates, government funding of religious indoctrination and others.
